Follow a Student
In the fall of 1882, Joshua Lippincott traveled West to recruit Native American children to the Carlisle Indian School. He documents this journey in a letter to Captain Richard Pratt, which was then published in The Morning Star, the Carlisle Indian School's student-run newspaper. Fortunately for us historians, in this letter he provided a list of the names of all the students that he brought back to Carlisle with him. Even more fortunately for us historians, the Carlisle Indian School preserved detailed records on every single student that passed through its doors- records that are now digitized online at the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center. In this exhibit, you will be able to follow the journey of one of those students, Ellen Hansell, using the evidence she left behind. Get started by clicking on the photograph. |
